Soothing stressed seasonal lockdown skin

Irish brand, Elave Skincare, is offering a solution for stressed skin as the seasons change into autumn and winter. Complexions that are eczema, rosacea, dermatitis, acne and breakout prone are becoming increasingly stressed by triggers such as poor diet, lack of fresh air and emotional stress caused by lockdown.

Karen Johnston, Elave Skincare advisor, explains:

“With winter just around the corner, and conditions becoming more challenging due to colder temperatures, drying winds and the central heating turned on, the dermis becomes even more stressed.

“There is no cure for eczema – treatment is all about managing the condition - however, you can dramatically reduce the number and severity of flare-ups by keeping a good skin care regime going every day.”

Karen Johnston from Elave SkincareTo tackle dry and itchy skin on the face and body, Karen Johnston from Elave Skincare suggests:

  • Use a soap-free wash in the bath or shower and make sure the water is not too hot. It is fine to bathe babies every day, for five to seven minutes
  • Use a good emollient, even if the skin does not appear dry and increase the number of times you moisturise every day
  • Don't have your bedroom too warm as this dries out the air and your skin
  • Certain foods, pollen, dust mites and even stress can spark attacks; try and identify triggers and avoid them
  • Avoid using electric blankets and hot water bottles for toddlers and older children, as these are actually one of the greatest irritants to eczema
  • Dry skin gets itchy, so take moisturiser with you everywhere and even if the skin does not appear dry, increase the number of times you moisturise every day
  • Avoid using cosmetic or baby wipes.  Whatever the promise, they use chemicals or synthetic fabrics which dry the skin out.
