Beauty brands unite for environmental impact assessment
Thirty-six of the world's leading beauty companies have formed a consortium to develop an industry-wide environmental impact assessment and enable consumers to make sustainable choices.
The EcoBeautyScore Consortium will co-build a scientific methodology for an environmental impact assessment and scoring system, working with sustainability consultancy Quantis to ensure a robust and scientific approach. A foot-printing and scoring prototype is targeted to be completed by the end of 2022, providing environmental scoring which will then be verified by independent parties. Scoring will be based upon the environmental impact of formulations, packaging and product usage.
The Consortium is open to all cosmetics and personal care companies, regardless of their size or resources. Founding members include Coty, Estée Lauder, L'Oréal, Shiseido, PZ Cussons, Johnson & Johnson, and Unilever amongst others.
Commenting on their participation in the EcoBeautyScore Consortium, Dr. Shimei Fan, Chief Scientific Officer at Coty, says:
“At Coty, sustainability is the ultimate driver of innovation. As a leader in Beauty, we are committed to collaborations that move our entire industry toward more sustainable innovation and greater transparency. We are delighted to join this Consortium, which helps Coty deliver the ground-breaking sustainability progress I came here to lead and drive crucial change in our industry.”
